At Datamaran, our people are at the heart of what we do. Meet the Crew is our new series showcasing team members and offering a behind-the-scenes look at what they do. Throughout the series, you’ll hear directly from individuals from across our business with diverse backgrounds and perspectives, all working toward a shared goal of integrating sustainability into the core of global business. We hope you enjoy getting to know them. In this first instalment, we get to know Fabian.
Meet Fabian Kommu, Key Accounts Advisor at Datamaran
“I work closely with organizations to understand their most pressing business challenges and how, with the help of Datamaran, we can solve them.”
Everyone across our global offices knows Fabian for his bright smile, kindness, and genuine interest in getting to know people or asking how they’re doing. Fabian grew up in Kent, Southeast England, in an Indian-Italian family. He studied Human Geography at Cardiff University, focusing on the study of space and how people interact with it. After university, he initially worked in conference sales, but this job was largely impacted by the lockdown measures happening during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This was a time of reflection and redirection for Fabian. He bought a book on customer success, which made him realize what aspects he loved in his conference sales job, as well as which aspects didn’t align with his passion for seeing customers grow and develop over time. As Fabian explained, ‘that book helped me understand that maybe customer success was the way forward”.
Since joining Datamaran five years ago, Fabian has enhanced his skills, progressing from a Customer Success Representative to a Customer Success Manager role and now excelling as a Key Accounts Advisor in the sales team. When asked to explain his job in a sentence, Fabian commented: “I work closely with organizations to understand their most pressing business challenges and how, with the help of Datamaran, we can solve them”. At every step, his roles were an opportunity to see clients gain the most from the Datamaran platform: "It's not about trying to sell something. It's more about being an attentive listener, and explaining how Datamaran is a solution that helps them achieve real change and make a difference”.
Why Datamaran? Fabian explained that the Datamaran value that resonates the most with him is collaboration. He shared that throughout his time, learning from everyone around him and working together has always been encouraged as a priority: “At the very start, that meant listening to our market leaders and making sense of complex topics like materiality”. As Fabian grew into his role, he realized that collaboration is also about actively listening to customers to understand what they need and sharing insights from the frontline with the sales, marketing, and product teams.
The mission of Datamaran is to embed sustainability into the structure of global companies, and different teams help achieve this in unique ways. For Fabian, equipping leaders with the right knowledge is a key part of his job. Specifically, he shared that his contribution to sustainability at Datamaran is providing clients with the necessary information and evidence they need to make the best decisions and prioritize areas of impact, risk, and opportunity, focusing their energies on what truly matters.
Looking at the future, Fabian thinks that, while the ESG landscape keeps changing, Datamaran's work is increasingly seen as business-critical and a value driver, slowly but steadily moving beyond a compliance exercise. Fabian has seen this shift unfold first-hand during his time at Datamaran. When he first joined, many companies approached materiality assessments as a “nice to have” exercise carried out every few years. With the arrival of global regulations such as the CSRD, sustainability quickly moved into the compliance spotlight, and for the first time, ESG leaders had a real voice in Board discussions. Sustainability reports evolved from glossy brochures into data-driven disclosures, backed by robust evidence. What excites Fabian most now is seeing forward-thinking organizations go beyond compliance—using these requirements as a catalyst to mitigate financial risks, address environmental impacts, and seize new opportunities that create long-term business value.
Beyond work, everyone at the office knows that Fabian is a huge Arsenal fan and loves football, whether it's talking about it, playing, or watching it. If you happen to see him in a pub in London, be prepared to talk about sports, football, and Mesut Özil!
A huge thanks to Fabian for sharing his journey!
